Middle School Learning Specialist

Our private school in Sandy Springs/Dunwoody is currently seeking a Middle School 6th - 8th Grade Learning Specialist.  The role of the Learning Specialist is to support students with different learning styles by providing intervention and remediation; supporting teachers in their efforts to advance students with different learning needs within the classroom; and managing and monitoring student assessments. The learning specialist will also be responsible for managing our RTI process and communicating with parents about their child’s needs, plans for remediation, and academic progress.

Specific Responsibilities include:

  • Manage and analyze assessments for all students at intervals throughout the school year
  • Collaborate with teachers to ensure students are progressing with literacy and math benchmarks
  • Identify students not meeting benchmarks as well as those students who are exceeding grade level benchmarks; devise plans to accommodate their academic needs
  • Use formative and summative assessment data to document progress, determine students’ academic needs, and develop instructional plans designed to foster academic growth
  • Develop Individual Education Plans (IEPs) for students who have been identified with a learning need and collaborate with the classroom teacher to differentiate classroom instruction
  • Support teachers within the classroom to adjust, modify, and enrich learning
  • Monitor the effectiveness of the support
  • Communicate with parents about their child’s needs and report progress
  • Provide direct support to students individually and in small groups
  • Assign and manage staff who provide additional support to teachers and students
  • Adhere to strict student confidentiality

Education and Experience:

  • Applicants must have attained a Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited institution; Master’s degree preferred.
  • Strong knowledge base in the area of learning differences
  • Special Education background
  • Co-teaching/collaborative experience
  • Middle School teaching experience
  • Experience writing individual student plans
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to implement formal and informal assessment programs (Knowledge of MAPS system a plus)
  • Ability to interpret and analyze formal and informal assessment data
